About the role

The Tech department design, builds and maintains all of the infrastructure and applications responsible for choosing and delivering 10,000+ meals every day. As a member of the Engineering function within Tech, you’ll be playing a key role in the design, implementation and maintenance of high-quality, robust solutions for our customer needs.

We work in cross-functional teams (Corporate, Eaters and Restaurants) that understand their customer needs in-depth, each with a unique set of upcoming projects. The Corporate team is looking to simplify ordering and invoicing for Enterprise-scale customers, the Eaters team is finding better ways of increasing engagement with the end consumers, and the Restaurants team is looking at integrations and kitchen-based solutions that can support nationally known brands. As an acquired startup with big growth plans, we're re-evaluating our previous choices and setting ourselves up for being able to deliver high quality, highly available systems as we scale.

As a Lead-level technologist, you’ll need to be a high-impact individual contributor that is adept at teaching and influencing other developers. You’ll work closely with Engineering management to make technical and cultural improvements that will have a lasting profound effect on the team. You’ll be supported by the Head of Engineering, with access to training and events throughout the year as well as take part in our biannual hackathons and regular share & learn team events.

Core responsibilities

  • Understand the long-term product and technical vision of Just Eat for Business and how they can support it
  • Implement major, non-trivial components, services or libraries with deep knowledge of the domain
  • Manage your own schedule and deliver to estimates given
  • Be an effective and inspiring communicator across multiple cross-functional teams where people have different backgrounds and skills
  • Identify functional and non-functional requirements, identify conflicts among them and define possible trade-off scenarios
  • Produce technical designs for large complex projects
  • Be a major contributor for documentation and learning culture, instilling best practices and guidelines for the team
  • Accountable for delivery of large, horizontal, mission critical engineering projects
  • Clear blockers for more junior members of the team, provide context and guidance, and know when to escalate
  • Keep up to date with industry developments and provide technical and non-technical feedback into the business

Who we’re looking for:

  • A “strong opinions, weakly held” attitude
  • Someone who multiplies the effectiveness of the people across the business
  • Someone who does not put ego or their own agenda into their choices
  • A good communicator who can converse with stakeholders, present their ideas and provide - - - feedback across the department
  • Can explain when and when not to use an SPA
  • Knows when to use PATCH vs a POST
  • A frontend specialist - we use Angular and SCSS primarily but are keen to get greater diversity of experiences within the team
  • Someone who’s comfortable with a wide range of technology - we have code written in - -
  • Typescript, PHP, SCSS, Python, Terraform and shell script, and we use MongoDB Atlas, Docker, Google Cloud, Cloudflare plus more
