Engineering Manager at Sorted Group Limited

  • UK Only
  • Sorted Group Limited
Job Description:

About the Role

Reporting to a Director of Engineering, you will lead one-or-more engineering teams. You will have strong technical skills that enable you to effectively own and maintain high-quality, large-scale software systems. You will own all stages of the software development life cycle such that you can successfully deliver on roadmaps that you define. You will have a proven track of developing the best engineering talent. You will be a coach and mentor a multi-disciplined team. Through your actions and behaviour, you will set a high bar for others to follow.

As an Engineering Manager, you will demonstrate strong ownership over the services you own. You will ensure they are operationally excellent, highly available, and that they can scale to meet our customers’ needs. You will work with stakeholders to balance the delivery of quality as well as new features. You will use data to make informed decisions and the right trade-offs. You will be able to communicate your decisions effectively to senior leadership and absorb feedback into your own mechanisms.

As a leader, you will be able to scale yourself out using effective methodologies. You will trust your teams to deliver but will verify to ensure any issues are detected early and handled effectively. You will continuously evolve the mechanisms your team engage in to ensure marginal gains are baked into the culture you create. That culture will be challenging, rewarding, and fun.

The day-to-day stuff:

No two days are ever the same at Sorted so what you’ll be up to will vary. The pace we move at also means priorities will change and you’ll need to be comfortable with this (we’ll support you!). But these are the things that will be core to your role and will keep you busy.

  • Establishing consistent system engineering standards across all product lines and support the systems engineers in embedding them
  • Setting the base line of “good” for your team and support their development through regular coaching, mentoring sessions and providing continuous feedback, addressing performance gaps as necessary
  • You will build a highly performant team, setting the recruitment standard, and work with product line teams to embed the engineers, making them productive quickly
  • You will work with product owners and architects to provide technical leadership, ensure that there is a sufficient and well formed backlog and that deliverables are made to time and quality
  • You will work with other engineering managers to establish and advocate best quality engineering practices across the organization
  • In conjunction with other stakeholders, establish best operational practices and ensure they are embedded within product line deliverables
  • In conjunction with key stakeholders, establish consistent and appropriate tooling in support of monitoring, logging, alerting, and CI/CD pipelines

Requirements

About you:

  • You are a strong verbal and nonverbal communicator able to explain complex technical concepts and share your knowledge with diverse audiences
  • You are well versed in requirements-gathering and managing stakeholders' expectations
  • You should be experienced in keeping the team focused on the most important activities against a complex backdrop of priorities
  • You can balance several, often conflicting, constraints and make rapid decisions on the way forward
  • You anticipate future technical needs for the product lines, ensuring that the teams are well placed to realize them and well versed in building roadmaps and can develop the long-term team vision, partnering with relevant stakeholders across the business
  • You can then be accountable for driving project execution
  • You have a curiosity about how cloud systems work and have hands on experience having worked with AWS
  • You understand what operational excellence for a SaaS product looks like and you can influence all product line stakeholders to achieve it
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure

And it would be super great if you had:

  • You know what it’s like to work in a scale up company and love the vibe (and sometimes chaos!)
