About the role:

We are looking for our first Principal Software Engineer to drive the evolution of our Ruby on Rails backend across Product Engineering, combining a well-honed sense of software craftsmanship with a keen eye for business impact. As a recognised technical expert in multiple domains, you’ll identify business and organisational needs across the group, deliver strategic roadmaps in line with business goals, identify new ways to leverage technology to deliver business impact, and lead BE engineers across the organisation in execution.

###Responsibilities:

  • Plan technological, infrastructural, and architectural improvements taking a long term (12 month) view, working with engineering leadership and leading other Engineers in the group
  • Navigate the most complex, ambiguous problems in the business to well-reasoned, impactful solutions
  • Ensure the alignment and support the delivery of OKRs across Backend
  • Mentor and coach your colleagues. Positively influence a broader culture of mentorship and coaching
  • Build strong relationships across teams, disciplines and functions, leading to improvements in the overall effectiveness of engineering
  • Build deep product and business knowledge. Identify opportunities to significantly impact business goals through innovation and experimentation
  • Be on the front line to firefight and triage. Rally engineers and drive resolutions to business critical problems
  • Be a thought leader in the organisation. Represent Indeed Flex in the wider engineering community
  • Evangelise best practices and communicate the impact of your group to a wide array of stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • A technology and platform agnostic perspective
  • A comprehensive understanding of operational excellence, including demonstrable impact towards improving it in previous roles
  • Hands-on development experience with a wide range of languages, frameworks, and technologies
  • Exceptional spoken and written communication, including an ability to effectively distil and communicate technical material to non-technical audiences
  • Understanding of business drivers and other functions, in particular a deep - understanding of the product function
  • Experience with A/B testing and other data-driven methodologies
  • Extensive, hands-on experience with building architectures at scale
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting the careers of engineers at a variety of levels through mentorship and coaching
  • Experience and understanding of how to represent data and solve problems in code: A computer science degree might be useful, but not required
